Where The Wild Things Are

Finishing up my first year of med school in a few short weeks, I won't be taking any more weekends off.  Luckily, I was able to enjoy a little weekend getaway with J a few weeks ago.  I know I didn't share before, but I finally got around to really looking at the pics.  I must say the whole trip was even more gorgeous than I remembered.

So, where did we go?  No place other than the Bronx Zoo!  Yes, don't let J's gorgeous nature photography fool you, there's no getaways just yet.  We just took a day trip to one of the city's five zoos.

I spared you all the pic of the orange langur, the above monkey species, with the missing eye.  That's something I certainly wouldn't have ever noticed if not for the amazing zoom on J's camera.

After checking out the Butterfly Garden, J really got some great shots as we rode the Wild Asia Monorail, a great way to see many different animals and parts of the zoo from a different perspective.  It's also a great way to rest your feet!

Although we were there for a few hours, there's still so much we didn't see.  We started off with a lot of energy, but by the end of our trip we were exhausted.

...the end.

Check out more information on the Bronx Zoo and the other parks under the Wildlife Conservation Society here.

Taco Tip

Here's
a quick tip for bulking up your taco meat (or meat sauce).  I literally
threw this together last night when I decided to save a portion of the ground
turkey I had for another recipe.  I didn't quite have enough meat to make
as much taco filling as I wanted, so I chopped up the last of my onion and
threw in a can of kidney beans.  Followed by a packet of low sodium taco
seasoning (one of these days I'll make up a stock jar of my own), water, a little
extra seasoning, and that's it.  A few tortillas, shredded cheddar,
leftover salad mix, and it's done!

I know, taco meat isn't the most aesthetically pleasing of things to look at; however, I wanted to share this great way to lighten up a meal and get some extra good stuff in it.  Much like frozen veggies, onions and beans are a few things I always keep on hand when I need to thicken or flavor up a meal on the spot.  I was also in much need of stress relief, so I gave myself the tinniest break to whip this up!

What are some of your favorite kitchen tips for stretching a meal?

Isn't She Lovely

I have a thing for pretty packaging, and this sweet little box takes the cake.  I've already started using a few of the products in my April Birchbox, and this one is already a new favorite.  I was shocked at how well it detangles my curly-kinky textured hair.  This is only my first box, but already I'm looking forward to the next.  I definitely picked the right time to subscribe too, especially since the May box includes some curated items from one of my favorite lifestyle bloggers.  So if you've ever been curious about Birchbox or are looking for a great last minute gift, this is a great time to sign up before it's too late!  If you're skeptical, just try it out on a monthly basis like me using this link (I'll get a few rewards points, and you'll get a link to share with friends so you can do the same!).

If you've yet to finish your Mother's Day shopping, here's a thoughtful yet last minute gift guide.  If you already have the gifts but haven't wrapped them yet, here's a little DIY gift wrap inspiration.

This post is NOT sponsored by anyone, I'm just really pleased with my first Birchbox!  It's nice to have something other than bills come in the mail.  Don't we all need a little "happy mail" in our lives?!  If you decide to give it a try sign up with my link, and as always thanks for reading and following along!

Life Lately // April & May

Time sure flies fast!  May is my last full month of classes, to be followed by a week of finals in June and a few precious months of summer.  Since I haven't been posting around this little space too much, I thought I'd share a few snippets of how I spent April.

April was spent like every month these days, studying and not nearly enough.  Luckily spring days mean I get to enjoy the sunlight longer as well as all the beautiful blooms outside.  I feel like I've said this before, but I can't help it.  This seriously is the best part about spring!  It's even better, when someone special sends you a bunch to keep inside ;-)

Since February I've been volunteering as a health coach, and one of the nice things about the program is that the participants get fresh fruit and veggies to take home.  Last week there was a lot of leftover from a healthy eating food demonstration, so I got to take home some brussel sprouts and mushrooms.  Believe it or not, it was my first time trying both.  I roasted them up with all the other vegetables I had in the fridge, and they were delicious!

My online shopping continues.  I don't get out to the malls much at all these days, so I try to take advantage of online sales whenever I can.  Here's a few winner's from my last haul, and a beautiful floral blouse that I can't decide whether or not to keep.  The fit is a bit large in my normal size, but I love how the print just pops.

One of the things I'm looking forward with my summer break is the chance to do some non-medical reading.  If I don't get around to finishing this book, it will certainly make it's way to my list of summer reading.

Academically, April continued to be pretty challenging, but at least I can say my last standardized patient of the school year is behind me.  It wasn't flawless; however, I generally do pretty well on them regardless of my feelings afterwards.  Either way I have a finals and a group presentation to prepare for, so there's no time to dwell.  Medical school will teach you that.  Do what you can and move on.

And the sweetest little jar.  I've been wanting to get a Frenchie for quite some time.  It may not be breathing, but it still brings a bit of joy minus all the care and maintenance!

If I disappear again it's only because of finals, but I'm excited for lots more time for blogging this summer and sharing all my little trips and projects along the way!  Be sure to follow me on Instagram for bits of my life and style in between posts!  And thanks for reading and following along!

Have a great week!
